Steve Smith (Bozeman Montana) is an accomplished oil painter working in a formalistic painterly style. Smith's subject matter reflects contemporary life in the Rocky Mountain West while paying homage to the historic sense of place that defines the region. His subject matter ranges from equine horse culture to architectural portrayals of buildings in Butte, Montana, once "The Richest Town on Earth". He makes direct common references through contemplative examination and formal figurative statements concerning everyday scenes and activities. Smith captures solitary parts of daily events as tangible objects within themselves. These compositions become moments of pure static posture, isolated from what is typically part of a highly orchestrated series of events. Smith makes these views valuable through the transient nature of observation. Steve Smith has paintings in numerous collections in the western U.S. He has an MFA from Montana State University and currently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.
